About Evan Wendel

I’m a passionate, bilingual undergraduate dedicated to bridging science, healthcare, and community impact. At Whitman College, I study Biochemistry and Spanish while actively engaging in both laboratory and field-based work that deepens my understanding of health and science in real-world settings.Currently, I conduct cancer research in the Kugel Lab at Fred Hutch, where I study chromatin-modifying enzymes in pancreatic and bile duct cancers to uncover subtype-specific vulnerabilities that could inform future therapies. Beyond the lab, I serve as Director of Whitman College First Responders, co-founding the campus’s student EMS program to expand emergency care access through clinical training, first aid education, and collaboration with Walla Walla EMS.As a volunteer EMT with Walla Walla County Fire District 4, I respond to 911 calls and work events across rural Washington, while also leveraging my Spanish to provide equitable care to underserved communities; an interest I deepened through my internship at Lahai Health, a free clinic in Seattle. From wilderness search and rescue, to sustainable forestry, to lifeguarding public beaches, my work centers on service, safety, and science. I’m especially drawn to rural medicine, and the role of language and culture in equitable healthcare delivery.I am always open to new opportunities to grow, serve, and collaborate; particularly at the intersection of science, medicine, and community health.
