About Ewan Rule

Since buying a water damaged University Atlas aged 10, I’ve had a fascination with maps and the Earth. My first job couldn’t have been better as I was responsible for creating maps for a major oil company’s North Sea survey & seismic operations unit. Working with truly talented people in a demanding but rewarding industry, I learned lots about geology & geophysics, geohazards, geodetics, and data management. My role involved dealing with many different internal departments, contractors, competitors and various government agencies. I enjoyed the immediacy of working in an operational unit where there was no room for delays, and a personal highlight was compiling the first release of the UKOOA pipelines database. Moving to a very small consultancy company, I was again fortunate to work with some very experienced people on regional geological studies in the Norwegian sector. Our client base included almost all the major operators, and I spent many happy hours logging core and visiting our clients in Stavanger and Oslo. Next, I moved into the software side with a small but multi-national, independent company supplying geoscience mapping & modelling software and data management solutions for the energy sector. This offered many opportunities for travel to clients large and small whilst experiencing different cultures and approaches to business. With offices in Australia, Malaysia and North America; it was a new challenge work in a distributed team. Starting in support and training, I progressed to technical sales and account management and had a few years as the product owner for our flagship mapping application. I progressed to business development where my curiosity and critical thinking skills are suited to exploring new markets and business opportunities. Having moved to The Netherlands in 2023, I have a residency permit and am leaning Dutch. I have now moved sector from oil & gas to hydrographic survey and marine software. This is a welcome return to working with clients who have ongoing offshore operations. Our client base works in critical sectors and there are a lot of opportunities to help through listening & learning, sharing experiences and building long-term trusted relationships.
