About Fabian Sinz

Prof. Fabian Sinz (Dr. rer. nat.) holds the W3 chair of Machine Learning at the Georg August University of Göttingen, Germany. His research interests lie at the intersection of machine learning and life science, in particular NeuroAI, AI for neuroscience applications, and digital twins. The research of his team focuses on building machine learning and AI methods to learn "digital copies" of biological systems from data and transfer their properties to machine learning models. These systems can then be used to derived new insights and predictions that might not or hardly be reachable by experimental methods, but that can be tested in biological experiments. Previously, Fabian was an independent group leader at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen as part of the CyberValley initiative from 2018-2021 (and -2024 in part time). Prior to that, he was a research assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston, Texas. He completed his Ph.D. in Computational Neuroscience (summa cum laude) at the International Max Planck Research School for Neural Information Processing the University of Tübingen in 2012. Fabian has published over 50 peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles, including high profile journals like Nature or Science. His group regularly publishes at flagship machine learning conferences such as NeurIPS and ICLR. His publications have received over citations (h-index > 28). Currently, he is the principal investigator in, among others, two DFG-funded collaborative research consortia (SFB1233 Robust Vision and SFB1456 Mathematics of Experiment, a research training group (RTG2906 Curiosity, for which he also serves as deputy speaker, an international project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), and a industry collaboration projected funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). In addition, he is a board member of the Campus Institute Data-Science (CIDAS) at the University of Göttingen.
