About Facil Tesfaye

I am an an Assistant Professor in the School of Modern Languages and cultures of the University of Hong Kong. I am a historian of Africa specialized in late 19th century African History and medical history (Ph.D, McGill; MA, UQAM). My research/teaching interests are: Colonial & Post Colonial African History [Indian Ocean Africa, Great Lakes Region, Ethiopia]; Colonialism and Disease; German Colonial Medical History in Africa, Medical History of Ethiopia; History of Medicine/Disease, History of Colonial Statistical Practices; Post Colonialism. I am also the director of the African Studies Programme of HKU, a small but dynamic programme that I have managed to develop by creating international partnerships during my tenure. The programme has received the attention of HKU’s top management for its significance for the university in fostering close relations with the African continent. The University has recenlty put together a steering committee, in which I am a member, looking into HKU-Africa relation in response to the Chinese One Road One Belt initiative.
