The work I do as a Project Engineer entails about 20% field work and 80% office work. My field work involves geotechnical site reconnaissance, inspection of subsurface exploration programs including hand augers, SPT, CPT, DCP and Infiltration Testing among others. Other aspects of my field work include selecting and locating of soil test locations to obtain representative subsurface information pertinent to specific project requirements. Methods and tools that I use range from simple measuring tools to handheld GPS units with the help of AutoCAD and ArcGIS softwares. Occasionally, I perform foundation subgrade inspection and observe foundation construction. Much of my office work involves preparing bid documents and geotechnical engineering report writing. Occasionally I hold discussions of project needs with clients (contractors and/or owners) under the supervision of my supervisor. This is usually achieved through conference calls and site kickoff meetings. The purpose of this it to engage our clients as much as possible, meet and exceed their expectations on project deliverables. In preparing bid documents I describe project sites and proposed construction as well as define our scope of geotechnical engineering work. I also estimate quantities and cost associated with our work. My supervisor who is a registered professional engineer reviews and approves these documents before being delivered. For my report writing, I provide geotechnical recommendations for both shallow and deep foundations. I also perform bearing capacity and settlement calculations for both shallow and deep foundations including, spread footings, drilled shafts, auger cast piles and driven piles. I also provide recommendations for equivalent fluid earth pressures for below grade walls, pavement design, seismic site class evaluation according to IBC 2018 standards and slope stability analysis.
