My PhD project is part of the CEA's FOCUS-DEM Sanitation/Dismantling project. Effluents generated by nuclear power plants are likely to be contaminated with gamma-emitting radionuclides (60Co, 137Cs), transition metals (e.g. Cu, Cd, Zn, Co), and cold or radioactive alkaline earth metals (e.g. 90Sr). Cyanobacteria are robust photosynthetic organisms with high potential for nuclear effluent decontamination. Some species are of particular interest for the decontamination of 90Sr because of their ability to accumulate highly alkaline earth metals, and sometimes even with selectivity for Sr relative to Ca (Benzerara et al. 2014; Mehta et al. My PhD aims to analyze the tolerance to ionizing radiation (gamma irradiation) and transition metals in various cyanobacteria (models or interesting for the decontamination of 90Sr), and to contribute to the understanding of the mechanisms of tolerance to these stresses for the improvement of a bioprocess.
