About Fatima Perez

One day, I envision myself standing before a classroom of my own, filled with linguistically and ethnically diverse students; teaching the prominent works of cultural novelists. I want to shape the young minds of tomorrow, one lesson at a time. I will encourage my students to identify with their cultural strengths; by challenging them to write from within, think beyond what they read, and reflect upon the intrinsic strength of their culture. For me, however, literature and teaching is a pathway to a lifelong professional commitment to educational reform. After years of teaching experience, I intend to attend graduate school to gain the knowledge necessary to change the policies that shape our current education system. Being both a student and teacher in a low-income district will provide me with valuable insight of the inner workings and failures within our urban schools. In turn, this will allow me to reform laws based on lived experience and practical applications to provide Texas students an equal education regardless of race or socioeconomic status.
