Background

About Federica Nardella

I have completed my AHRC-funded PhD in Ethnomusicology at King’s College, London under Prof. Martin Stokes’ and Dr. Katherine Butler Schofield’s supervision. I am an MMus Ethnomusicology graduate from SOAS and I hold a BA in English Literature & Creative Writing from Royal Holloway. My research has focused on the late nineteenth-century Ottoman popular art song form şarkı in relation to literacy, linguistics, language pedagogy and debate, and the emergence of the press. I have an interest in (ethno)musicological approaches to environmental issues and sustainability, as well as ecological approaches to musical cultures, with a focus on Central Asia (Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan). I am currently developing a postdoctoral project exploring the sound ecology of Turkic Central Asia and interspecies communication in the context of eagle hunting in Kyrgyzstan, as well as continuing research on Ottoman song. My other research interests include West African tasawwuf (Sufism), zoomusicology, and Indigenous cultures of the Americas and Central Asia. I am also CELTA-certified English teacher and I am passionate about projects that promote education for underprivileged individuals and improve coexistence among communities. My focus is on cultivating a love for learning and discovery in students, encouraging them to develop their own voices and critical thinking. In 2011, I began teaching English language and literature in London. I have taught students of different age groups (10 years old to adult learners), elementary and intermediate mixed-ability classes, and learners from diverse cultural backgrounds ever since. These include Italy, Lithuania, Iran, Somalia, Russia, Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, France, Colombia, Mexico, China, Costa Rica, Kyrgyzstan, East Turkestan. I have developed my teaching skills in a variety of settings: online, one-to-one, private school, and community education projects (CIC). I have taught and designed materials and programs according to the British national curriculum, KS3-4, GCSE, and A-Levels. I have also taught Italian and music to young and adult learners from the UK, Lithuania, and France. I have lived in Italy, the UK, and Turkey and I am very skilled at intercultural communication and cultural sensitivity. I have experience in organizing, managing, and leading community outreach projects (North London YMCA) as well as fundraising and promoting charitable causes. Additionally, I am an ambassador for the cancer research charity Blood Cancer UK and the nonprofit International Chaar Appaloosa Horse Association (Kyrgyzstan).
