In the year I began my career in psychiatry after working in the nursing and care sector within nursing homes and residential care facilities. My experience in psychiatry spans acute, long-term, and outpatient care. Prior to pursuing my Master of Advanced Nursing Practice, I spent 3.5 years as a consultative psychiatric nurse at Flevo Hospital in Almere, where I also served on the national board of the V & VN consultative psychiatry group. Additionally, I was a member of various steering committees, including those focused on coercion and compulsion, pregnancy and psychiatry, and tinnitus. After completing my training as a nurse specialist in October 2013, I worked in geriatric psychiatry as a clinical lead practitioner. In this role, I operated as an independent practitioner on a closed ward recognized under the Dutch BOPZ legislation. From 2016, I worked for the specialized program for refugees and asylum seekers within GGz Centraal. As a lead practitioner, I treated refugees and asylum seekers with often complex, multi-faceted issues. During the project's initial phase, I developed the care pathway that led to an independent treatment program. In July 2018, I transitioned to addiction care, where I serve as a lead practitioner. I am responsible for the Medical Care Units (MZU) in Lelystad, the establishment of new clinics, and addiction care for asylum seekers. Additionally, I am conducting doctoral research within the research group for personalized integrated care at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. My research focuses on integration knowledge at the organizational and managerial levels (meso level). The study examines how asylum seekers living in asylum centers can receive continuous personalized care. Organizing and managing this care is extraordinarily complex due to the diverse cultural backgrounds of asylum seekers, their multiple traumas, and the Dutch legislation, which is geared towards repatriation rather than integration. Since 2022, I have been working as a lecturer-researcher in the Master of Innovation in Care and Welfare and the Master of Advanced Nursing Practice at the University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. I am also a Trustee of the Neuman Systems Model and a member of the Thematic Group on Substance Use in Humanitarian Settings.
