About Fernando Arce

I'm currently one of the senior editors for The Grind, a free Toronto-based news/arts print publication. We're currently on our second year of publication. Despite how expensive the endeavour has been, we remain completely independent and reader-supported. I hold a similar position as an editorial board member of The Media Co-op. As a reporter, I write mainly about social justice issues, housing, and city and provincial politics. I have some investigatory skills and have led a couple of independent investigations. I also like to write long-form think pieces and analyses about international politics involving Latin America. I also write scheduled and specialized newsletters, copy for fundraisers, donor events, AGMs and other announcements. I occasionally also help run and monitor our social media accounts. As an editor, my main goal is to help writers express their ideas exactly as they intend, in the most clear way possible, and always in their own voice. Doing that involves as much active listening as it does clear, concise and confident communication from me to help the project constantly move along. I was able to practice this at length as the assignment editor for New Canadian Media, where I worked with and mentored professional immigrant journalists whose first language was not English. The results speak for themselves: In 2022, as a team, we helped the organization with the CJF Award in Digital News Innovation. My latest work can be found at
