Background
About Fernando Magallanes
Associate Professor Fernando Magallanes is an award winning Landscape Architecture Educator. As an academic professor he has won teaching awards including the prestigious Outstanding Educator from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. In the Department of Landscape Architecture at North Carolina State University College of Design he has lectured and directed Graduate and Undergraduate design studios in Landscape Architecture and first year design, Drawing/representation/visualization, Construction and Materials, Landscape History (ancient to early 20th Century), and Contemporary Landscape Architecture. Professor Magallanes is a leader in international travel and educational experiences for design students. He has been involved in university study abroad programs since 1992. He has run studio courses in Spain; Berlin, Germany; and Prague, Czech Republic. The studio courses expose students to travel research and various field study methods. His courses introduce students to identifying the influences and variables affecting the making of “place.” He teaches sketching, photography, and walking as primary activities for reading the landscape and heightening student observation skills, their appreciation for history, and establishing a cognitive basis for modifying the environment when designing. His public lectures and conference topics cover a wide range of research material. His publications include the use of drawings in understanding landscapes, professional interdisciplinary community design, the works of Mexican designer Luis Barragan, Landscape Surrealism, and urban design development of cities. Early in his academic and professional career Professor Magallanes was involved in defining neighborhood design character, protecting, promoting, and revitalizing neighborhoods in cities and towns including Raleigh and Salisbury, NC; and Randallstown and Dundalk, Maryland.
