About Fiona Ball
Originally from Geneva, Switzerland, I am currently a postgraduate researcher and PhD candidate in Solar and Terrestrial Physics at the University of Southampton. My research focuses on the polar cusps–the regions of the Earth's magnetic field (magnetosphere) which are open to and thus directly impacted by solar radiation and thus have wider-reaching implications for space weather mitigation. I use a wide array of instruments, including in-situ and polar-imaging satellite data, as well as high-latitude ionospheric radar data and optical instruments in order to probe the cusps. My current work focuses on measuring how wide the cusps are at the point they meet the Earth's ionosphere. I am also part of a team investigating the newly identified GHOST (dayside continuum) aurora, with my contribution specifically investigating the large-scale magnetospheric processes that could lead to GHOST observation.
