About Fiona McCarthy

I was born 1st Generation Irish, where I first started having an interest in languages being that my cousins spoke ‘funny’ English. I was immediately drawn to people that were different than myself and thankful to have an understanding of other cultures. I feel this is why I have followed a path of teaching, so I could be living internationally. Once in college, I majored in Spanish, and loved the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in Spain, in Salamanca and Alicante. I loved it so much I stayed on as an Au Pair in Mallorca for the summer. After graduating in May 2001, I immediately looked for work in Colorado, knowing that I wanted to get back to the mountains! I started teaching Middle School for Cherry Creek Schools, and has taught in the mountains of Colorado as well. I taught for four years, yet, I felt I needed to improve my Spanish. So, I went back to Spain, received my CELTA and continued to live and work as an ESL Teacher for all levels and all ages. I lived in Galicia for two years, and then returned to Colorado and found Nederland, an eclectic town in the foothills outside Boulder, where I taught ESL to adults and Spanish to younger students, for three years at the Journey Language Center. I have been teaching for 14 years, and I create any opportunity to travel and/or try new things. I have volunteered for one year at Kripalu, a Yoga Retreat Center in Massachusetts, before I came to Saudi Arabia, where I am living, currently. I am teaching Saudi girls at a Saudi school since April 2014. I am a person of integrity, and am fun, caring, enthusiastic, honest, fair, creative and compassionate with an outgoing, vibrant and humorous personality. I enjoy teaching all classes with an easy-going, friendly spirit connecting with students of all ages. I bring culture into the classes, naturally, which creates more interest for the students and they receive a better understanding for the language!
