About Fiona Oconnor

University lecturer. My subject areas are psychology and philosophy, with a particular interest in psychoanalysis. I have also published philosophical articles on ethical issues. Theatre background: I trained with the Dance Theatre of Harlem in New York. Ballet. MA in Text and Performance, Kings College, London and RADA. Produced and directed several plays and adaptations for the stage. In set up the St. John’s Mill Theatre Company in Co. Kerry, Ireland. A series of premières of European plays in Ireland was given yearly at St. John’s Mill Beaufort. Works included ‘Divine Words’ by Ramon del Valle Inclan. This last production won a Mise en Scene Award from the Arts Council of Ireland. I adapted the George MacDonald novel, The Light Princess, and staged it in Kerry. 2013 Produced Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' for 400th Anniversary of Puck Fair, Killorglin, Co. Kerry MA Psychoanalytical Studies, Tavistock Clinic and UEL Hennessy Short Story Award Winner. Shortlisted for J.G. Farrell Fiction Award 2011 and Fish Short Story Prize 2012, Asham Short Story Award 2013. Published in the Phoenix Anthology of Irish Short Stories, edited by the late David Marcus. Stinging Fly Magazine 2012, Fiction International, University of San Diego Press, edited by Harold Jaffe, and Hibernia magazine. Stories have appeared in Crannog Magazine, Enigma, nth Position online magazine, Underground and Smoke. Took part in the Sean O’Brien poetry writing week at Château Ventenac, France. Feature writer for The Guardian, Time Out, The Big Issue and The Evening Standard. I have also written for academic textbooks. Workshops taught include dance and movement for actors at the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts. Movement and stagecraft for singers at the Royal Academy of Music. Ballet at Mannheim Hochshule fur Tanz, Germany. Drama workshops and devised theatre for Killarney Asylum Seekers Initiative. Words into movement workshops at Battersea Arts Centre, London.
