About Fiona Zerai

I’m a researcher fascinated by how light interacts with biological tissue—and how we can use that knowledge to push the boundaries of non-invasive imaging. My work focuses on improving how we visualize tiny blood vessels in highly scattering media, like human skin. To tackle this, I develop skin-mimicking phantoms—solid models that replicate the optical properties of real tissue. By embedding 3D-printed vessel structures into these phantoms, I help test and refine Spatio-Angular Filtering (SAF) imaging, which enhances depth penetration and resolution. Beyond research, I love problem-solving, collaborating, and finding creative ways to bridge science and healthcare. Whether I’m troubleshooting an optical setup, designing a new phantom, or exploring new ways to connect optics, engineering, and medicine, I thrive on challenges that push medical imaging forward.
