About Flaura Winston

Pediatrician, engineer, professor. Her approach -"pragmatic rigor"- on health, safety, behavior & engineering led to patents and mHealth applications and informed laws, products, policies and programs. My journey in innovation Dr. Winston is a board-certified pediatrician, doctorally-trained engineer, clinical researcher, and scientific director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention, a large pediatric injury research center at The Children's Hospital of A tenured Professor of Pediatrics,at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, she heads multiple large research projects on preventing teen crashes, preventing injuries to children in crashes, and preventing traumatic stress disorder in injured children and their parents. A highlight of her work is the focus on translation - research to action to impact - pragmatic rigor that ensures that her research findings are translated for and disseminated to those who can effect change to save children's lives. Much of this dissemination work is through the Web and mHealth applications and through extensive networks of educators, engineers, health leaders, and others. To this end, she heads the Center for Child Injury Prevention Science, an National Science Foundation catalyzed Industry/University Cooperative Research Center, to advance evidence-based safety interventions implemented by industry. Dr. Winston has received awards from the Academy Health, American Institute of Medical and Biologic Engineers, American Public Health Association, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the American Philosophical Society and the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars.
