The optical properties of semiconductor nanocrystals (SCNC) can suffer from nonradiative deactivation. Consequently, sub-unity average photoluminescence quantum yields (PL QY) due to illumination-induced ionization and non-radiative Auger recombination can be observed. While non-emissive particles can have a significant effect on the PL quantum yield they are not assessable in common ensemble measurements. We use a confocal laser scanning microscope coupled with an AFM to probe them.
