About Fran Perler

I recently started a small consulting firm called "Perls of Wisdom' to expedite paid, volunteer and mentoring opportunities using my 35 years of industrial research experience. My broad background enables me to quickly understand and evaluate many different research scenarios. After a short retirement, I've decided that isn't for me. I am exploring options for part time or short term (1- 5 years) work and/or mentoring. I trained under Clyde Hutchison, learning recombinant DNA during its infancy. I then did postdocs at Roche Institute of Molecular Biology and Harvard Medical School. My NEB career as a Principal Investigator merged commercial and basic science goals. I began in Parasitology, seeking potential diagnostic and vaccine candidates for Malaria and River Blindness.Then I moved on to thermostable DNA polymerases and replication enzymes from Archaea. This led to the identification of inteins in Archaea. My group proved that inteins splice as proteins and defined the standard and 2 variant protein splicing mechanisms. My last basic research project involved mosquito proteomics. I have a broad background in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics and Biochemistry with 10 US patents and ~90 peer reviewed publications.
