About Frank Small
Engineering Technician Controls Designer & Builder Field Service Technician Master Electrician License, Vermont Machine Designer and Builder Outside-the-Box Problem Solver Trained Laser Safety Officer Driven Toward Continuous Improvement Technical/SOP Writer Negotiated with and Qualified Vendors Computer Aided Drafting (AutoCAD) Keen Eye Toward Safety Knowledgeable of the following standards: NFPA 70, 70E, 79, UL 508A, and ANSI Z136.1 Supports Efforts of Teams and Customers Expert Witness ACCOMPLISHMENTS Design/Build Projects Moved an off-line printed “code date” operation to an on-line printed operation. By changing the printer type and the orientation of a simple mechanical component of the packaging machines, this allowed increased dwell time to laser mark the product without increasing cycle time. Result was reduced scrap, cost per print, and man power over the off line process with a payback less than two years for dual systems. On a continuous web laminating process, the operator was require to cut the web multiple times and punch out samples for QA testing. By designing a hand operated punch and die set mounted on the machine in two locations, the operator was able to take samples from various points in the process without cutting the web. Result was a reduced amount of scrap since the web did not need to be “run in” to align after each sample. There was also a labor-saving cost associated with this project. Designed and implemented a PC board to increase battery tester reliability and functionally. This solved recurrent down time caused by the original design and allowed for additional test parameters. In a manual packaging cell, the operator was required to remove the hanger hole scrap from a retail blister package by hand. Designed a machine to remove the plastic scrap automatically when the package was inserted into it. This incorporated easy changeover tooling and poka-yoke design to prevent product damage.
