Franz Leberl (born 1945), Austrian, with degrees from Vienna University of Technology (Dipl-Ing, 1967; Dr.techn, 1972). Work in Holland, California, Minnesota, Colorado and Austria. He is today professor emeritus of Computer Science at Graz University of Technology, specializing in Computer Vision and Graphics. 367 publications, 15 patents and 48 PhD-graduates. Founder of the Institute for Digital Image Processing at Graz Joanneum Research (1980), the Austrian Association for Pattern Recognition (1980), Vexcel Corporation (Boulder, Colorado, 1985), Vexcel Imaging GmbH (Austria, 1993, UltraCam Aerial Cameras) and the Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision at Graz University of Technology (1992). He was CEO of the Austrian Research Centers (today Austrian Institute of Technology AIT) in Seibersdorf, 1996-1998. President of Commission (Theory and Algorithms) of the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), Awards: Otto-von-Gruber Medal (ISPRS, 1976), Fairchild Award (ASPRS, 1991), (1996), Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria (2005), Outstanding Technical Achievement Award (ASPRS, 2012), Brock Gold Medal (ISPRS, 2012). Various "Best Paper Awards"​. In May 2006, Vexcel Corp. and Vexcel Imaging GmbH were sold to Microsoft Corp.(USA). Franz Leberl became a Director of, and then consultant to Microsoft Virtual Earth (2006-2008). A loose association continues with Microsoft’s "Virtual Earth"(now to coordinate Microsoft-sponsored research at his University Institute. During 2008 he was the Dean of Computer Science at Graz University of Technology. As professor emeritus, he remains loosely active at his University Institute for Computer Graphics and Vision in a cordial cooperation with his professorial partners. Check for more detail.
