About Fraser Johnson

My goal is to maximise the potential of traffic control and traffic performance through research, development and implementation. I have over 25 years experience in traffic engineering, traffic management and traffic control systems with Transport for NSW (and formerly Roads and Maritime Services and Roads and Traffic Authority of NSW) in Sydney, Australia. I have been a user of the Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS) in operation and configuration since 1994, have assisted the development of SCATS since 2002 and have been one of the technical managers managing the development of SCATS since 2008. I have been training SCATS users on occasions for more than 20 years, including those with a first language other than English and in different countries. I led the development of the Smart Motorway guidelines for Roads and Maritime Services leading to the development of the Austroads Guide to Smart Motorways, particularly in regard to ramp metering signal design and arrangements and Lane Use Management System functionality and arrangements. I have some experience in the operation, configuration and development of the SCATS Ramp Metering System (SRMS).
