Background

About Fred Leeman

I am an independent Art Historian. My professional experience comprises research and teaching at a university as well as organising exhibitions in a museum that operates on an international level. Since 1997 I have worked for art institutions throughout Europe. I have taught and lectured in Europe as well as in the US. My recent publications focus on Symbolist Art, in particular Emile Bernard and Odilon Redon. My research is aimed at discovering unexpected angles to look at art, even if it is art by well known artists like Van Gogh. In my experience, knowing more about a work of art greatly enhances the purely aesthetic experience. It is my professional mission to share my findings with a wider audience. Some of the exhibitions I (co-) curated: 2023 La Grande Bleue. Schilders van de Méditerranée, Laren (Singer Museum) 2018 Impressionism & Beyond. A Wonderful Journey, Laren (Singer Museum) 2014-15 Emile Bernard, Paris (Musée de l'Orangerie); Bremen (Kunsthalle); 2012 Odilon Redon, Madrid (Fondation Mapfre) 2011 Odilon Redon, Prince du rêve, Paris (Grand Palais) 2010 Landschappen van de ziel / Paysages de l’âme, The Hague (Gemeentemuseum) 2008 Van Gogh. Heartfelt Lines, Vienna (Albertina Museum) 2006 Mondrian, Brescia (Museo di Santa Giulia) 2005 De Haagse School en de jonge Van Gogh, The Hague (Gemeentemuseum) 2004 Gli Impressionisti e la neve, Torino (Promotrice) 2002 Der Sämann - Vincent van Gogh, Winterthur (Villa Flora) 2002-2003 Da Cézanne a Mondrian, Treviso (Casa dei Carraresi) 1995 Treasures from the Mesdag Collection, Edinburgh (National Gallery of Schotland) 1994 Odilon Redon, Chicago (Art Institute of Chicago), Amsterdam (Van Gogh Museum), London (Royal Academy) 1990 Van Gogh and Early Modern Art, Essen (Museum Folkwang), Amsterdam (Van Gogh Museum) 1990 Emile Bernard 1868-1941, Mannheim (Kunsthalle), Amsterdam (Van Gogh Museum) 1988 Ottocento / Novecento, Amsterdam (Van Gogh Museum) 1987 Henri de Toulouse - Lautrec, Amsterdam (Van Gogh Museum) 1987 Vincent van Gogh, Rome (Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna)
