About Fred Rawlins

As the Senior Associate Dean of Simulation and Educational Technology and an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM)- Virginia, I bring over 28 years of experience as an emergency physician. I also serve as an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University. My expertise lies in managing undifferentiated patients, a skill that complements my passion for teaching pre-clinical medical students. I am dedicated to developing computer algorithms for syndromic surveillance, enhancing the evaluation and screening of undifferentiated patients.My professional journey has been deeply intertwined with the world of simulation. Since earning my private pilot’s license for single and multi-engine aircraft in 1991, I have logged over hours of flight on turboprop planes with an instrument rating system. This experience in aircraft simulation has significantly influenced my approach to medical simulation. At VCOM, I collaborate with various departments to enrich the 1st and 2nd year curriculum by integrating psychomotor cases that provide students with hands-on, controlled learning experiences. Additionally, I have developed standardized patient and manikin-based simulation scenarios for training certifications, extending these opportunities to other organizations.
