Background
About Fred Sigman
The idea of globetrotting and living abroad has defined my life. As an adult, I have lived in Mexico, Peru, and Cambodia. My travels have taken me to every continent, to places where I have taught, learned, filmed, and written. The vagabond and pilgrim’s life of travel is now my choice. PHOTOGRAPHY Upon graduating high school in Las Vegas, Nevada I was hired as a wildlife photographer for the Florida Fish and Game. In 1986 I began a decade-long project photographing the famed Fontainebleau Forest south of Paris. This led to other projects that explored the cultural landscapes of 18th-century mission churches in Baja, vintage motels and modern casinos in Las Vegas, and the altered desert wetlands around Las Vegas. In the last fifteen years I have photographed and filmed ancient architectural landscapes throughout Mexico and Peru as well as throughout a dozen countries in Asia. Currently, I am taking advantage of the border closures in Cambodia due to the coronavirus to significantly add to my media archives of the famed Angkor temples. These assets are available through my company eLearning Media. PUBLICATIONS In May of 2019, Smallworks Press in Las Vegas, Nevada published my book "Motel Vegas." In 2021, SWP will release "Handbook for a Burning Age." As the co-writer to Will Roger, one of the founders of Burning Man, the book explores the challenges of climate change and the role individuals can take toward effecting the necessary shifts in culture to curb this Earth-threatening trend. EDUCATION I have completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in art history and philosophy. My Master’s thesis explored the religious aspects of Wassily Kandinsky’s early painting while my doctoral dissertation centered on the work of four contemporary photographers who were interested in the spiritual and ancient landscapes around the world. As a Professor of Art History in Las Vegas I have specialized in teaching courses in Asian art, Indigenous Arts, and the History of Photography. My teaching has always been informed by my experiences from around the world. With the growth of Internet-based educational opportunities for both student and teacher alike, my approach to teaching is ever being re-adapted. I continue to teach those courses online for the College of Southern Nevada, and through my brand WanderSight, I offer online courses in Buddhism, the arts, and the humanities. Presently I live in the town of Siem Reap, Cambodia. From here I travel around Asia to film, photograph and write about the art and architecture of this part of the world.
