Background
About Freddie Emms
Growing up in the Chiltern Hills, I have always had an intrinsic fascination with the nature on my doorstep. This includes a long-standing love of nature's interdependence - how every individual species contributes in its own unique way to the survival of our global collective. I think this is true of the environmental movement too: every one of us is significant not only in the global ecosystem but also in the fight to protect it.Now, as a young advocate, campaigner and conservationist, I am working to bridge our disconnect with nature and inspire others to take action. To this end, my love of nature has led me through initiatives like the Chilterns New Shoots programme and the FSC’s Young Darwin Scholarship to a range of roles spanning campaigning, governance, communication and youth engagement. One key role is with the RSPB Youth Council - an incredible group pushing the RSPB to be its best from a youth perspective. United by a friendship forged from a common goal, it's emblematic of the incredible strength of community in this space, which is a constant source of motivation.I also sit on the RSPB’s Communications & Engagement Advisory Committee, providing thematic youth insight, and work with Teach the Future, helping lead national political engagement around embedding climate and nature across the education system. With a long-standing passion for language and literature, informed by my studies as a Modern Languages student, much of my work focuses on how storytelling can deepen our relationship with nature. As a founding member of the Generation Nature youth storytelling collective, we harness the power of storytelling through our youth-led podcast and wider engagement events.I write regularly about nature, youth voice and connection on social media and for platforms such as the RSPB’s Wingbeat, and am an experienced public speaker, having hosted and contributed to panels, workshops, and talks at events from youth summits and festivals to conferences and grassroots gatherings.Collaborating regularly across the sector - including with charities, organisations, events, consultations, policymakers, and other young people - I love being involved with a wide range of incredible initiatives, bringing the power and hope that is so desperately needed. Change is something that is far easier to achieve when we come together, and all around us, a momentum is building that is impossible to ignore.
