About Frederic Lens
I obtained my PhD at KU Leuven (Belgium) in 2005. In 2010, I was appointed as assistant professor (tenure tracker) at Leiden University, and moved to Naturalis Biodiversity Center (Leiden, The Netherlands) as a permanent researcher in 2014, where I was promoted as senior researcher in 2018 and group leader of the group Functional Traits in 2020. We have three main research lines in Functional Traits:(1) investigate why plants became woody during evolutionary history,(2) disentangle the impact of wood formation in the stem on total plant drought tolerance, and (3) develop a wood identification tool based on AI algorithms of images derived from wood anatomical sections to fight illegal logging. Since 2022, I have been coordinating the Leiden Biodiversity network, an initiative that combines nearly all faculties of Leiden University, as well as Naturalis, Hogeschool, and the city of Leiden. With this new emerging network, we aim to come up with structural nature-inclusive solutions that will be translated into policy.
