Background
About Fredrick Crawford
Fred Crawford’s career reflects a lifelong connection to land, people, and community. After earning his degree in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin, Fred began his career in land surveying as a field crew chief exploring the woods and hills of Central Texas. In 1983, he became a Registered Professional Land Surveyor and joined the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA), where he surveyed large-scale electric transmission projects across the region. As Manager of LCRA’s Surveying and Mapping Department, Fred helped pioneer and later led the development of a comprehensive Geographic Information System (GIS) that became a cornerstone of the agency’s operations. After fifteen years managing the Surveying, Mapping, and GIS Department, Fred transitioned to oversee LCRA’s extensive real estate holdings as Manager of Real Estate Services. In that role, he directed right-of-way acquisition, land conservation, real estate portfolio management, and landowner relations—ensuring responsible stewardship of public assets. He also helped establish and manage the Colorado River Land Trust, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to conserving lands within the Colorado River watershed.Over the course of his career, Fred has developed deep expertise in leadership, asset management, water and electric utilities, project management, contract management, land conservation, public policy, and dispute resolution. His work has consistently centered on the intersection of land, community, and conservation—values that continue to guide his service and leadership today. After 25 years in state government, Fred retired from LCRA and turned his passion for public service toward volunteerism. He is active in his community in rural Swain County, North Carolina, where he serves as a board member of Mainspring Conservation Trust and Chair of the Lands Committee, applying his expertise in real estate and land conservation. Fred is also active in the Bryson City Chamber of Commerce and several local civic organizations, continuing his lifelong commitment to community and stewardship.
