Research in our lab is centered on DNA damage generated by reactive oxygen species, ionizing and UV radiation, and low-energy electrons. We focus notably on radical-induced lesions in the presence of oxygen and antioxidants. We are interested, from a chemical perspective, in understanding the mechanisms of formation of DNA lesions under various conditions which can provide fundamental insights for the comprehension of processes including carcinogenesis, aging, radiotherapy, etc. To achieve this research, the main technique we employ is a powerful LC-MS/MS platform. For the progression of my research, I'm exploiting my abilities in organic synthesis in order to prepare modified nucleic acid components and lesions. I'm especially interested in "nucleic peroxidation" or the propagation of damage by DNA peroxyl radicals to vicinal components, which generate so-called tandem lesions, i.e, the dual alteration of two adjacent nucleotides. I also have a marked interest in epigenetic modifications of DNA at CpG dinucleotides and the implication of these sites in mutagenesis and aging.
