About Gabriele Poli

I started my research in the field of Remote Sensing while still studying for my Degree in Telecommunications Engineering in 2001 and I have been continuing working on my research after obtaining my PhD. My research is carried out within the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (University of Florence) and the Satellite Receiving Station (Prato Campus, PIN) and covers mainly: Specification, development and maintenance of real-time processing software for satellite data (especially from NOAA, MSG and also SeaWiFS, MODIS satellites) Study and implementation of algorithms for radiometric calibration and correction, image navigation and registration Development, calibration and validation of algorithms for obtaining sea/land geophysical products Establishment of procedures for continuous and real-time environmental monitoring at regional and national scales (see Research Projects and publications) Study and implementation of several algorithms for digital image analysis and processing Maintenance and updating of the Receiving Station digital data archive (especially with MySQL) Management of instrumentation (including digital receivers and tracking systems) for direct reception of level 0 HRPT data from NOAA and level 1.5 data (via EUMETCast) from MSG satellites The development/maintenance of software (mainly in C and C++) is focused on the entire processing chain (a distributed and low latency pipeline processing system) of level 0 data including radiometric calibration, image navigation and registration, algorithms for level 2 geophysical products. It also addresses the aspects of: Products metadata and quality description (with reference to the European INSPIRE directive and the related standards from ISO 19100 series, WMO and OGC) Data interchange (with the use of formats such as HDF, BUFR, GRID and GeoTIFF) Specialties: Extensive use of Windows and Linux/UNIX platforms Advanced knowledge of C and C++ programming languages (including experience with Windows MFC libraries and multithreading synchronisation); Good knowledge of FORTRAN90 programming language; Experiences with Interactive Data Language (IDL) and MATLAB
