About Gail M Simpson

In January 2019, Dr. Gail Simpson discovered the philanthropic work of Shellie Carlson when she returned to Ethiopia after a 45-year absence. Gail now works with local government officials in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia on project designed to furnish Amhara Region’s public hospitals with the medical devices and supplies they need to deliver 21st century healthcare. She is especially interested in issues concerning how donated equipment is repaired, reused, and ultimately recycled in a responsible way. Dr. Simpson went to Ethiopia as a young woman where she found work studying rural settlement projects, first for IDR at Haile Selassie (now Addis Ababa) University, then on a UN/FAO team. She witnessed the first two years of Ethiopia’s socialist revolution before returning to the US to pursue a varied career. She spent more than 35 years as an economist, entrepreneur, executive, and management consultant skilled in research, strategic planning, product development, marketing, risk management and fraud control. Her background includes serving as Senior Advisor to an investment banking firm; founding an Inc 500 company; conducting seminal research that led to the adoption of new underwriting, claims and executive compensation practices in household name insurance companies; and introducing investment strategies to California’s largest public pension funds.
