About Gannon Rust

I am in my eighth year of teaching English in the state of Texas. Before I began my career, I found a love for helping children develop into lifelong learners as a camp counselor for the YMCA. I came to realize that finding a child’s passion in everything they did created knowledge and growth. And if children saw me as enthusiastic and heartfelt, they would emulate this as well and find their own spirited drive in what they chose to set their mind to. This excitement for learning naturally transferred into the classroom. My other perpetual love besides creating lifelong learners is reading and writing. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Secondary Education at Sam Houston State University. During this time, I published poetry and placed in various writing contests put on through the university, as well as completed a draft for a novel. As I continue to teach, my grasp on the English language only becomes more refined as I consider myself a student of English and the aspects and effects of literature and the written word. Piecing these two passions together has created an ongoing adulation with teaching as each year has given me a nuanced view on my craft and how to approach it for the following year. I have taught students from all levels of socio-economic status and abilities. I have experience with students not speaking a word of English as well as students needing accommodations and modifications. I have taught remedial classes in both reading and writing. I have taught National Merit Scholars, Pre AP, and Advanced Placement Courses. Each student, connection, and experience has taught me how to be a better teacher and to continue to perfect my craft. Even with the array of students I have had, one thing has never changed. Helping a student find passion in what they were learning created knowledge and growth and, maybe even more importantly, a love for knowledge and growth. This is what I am able to bring to any working environment.
