About Garrett Ayers
In 2021, I pivoted out of my 20-year career as a theatre director/college professor and into a leadership role at an HVAC company. Yes, you read that correctly: I was a theatre director and now work for an HVAC company. The fit is better than you might think. My current title at Jerry Kelly is “Customer Experience Training Director” but they might as well call it “Director of Training and Improvement.” I love my job because it enables me to integrate all of the specialties, skills, and passions that brought me success as a director and teacher with a company obsessed with excellence and improvement and a culture, leadership team, and group of technicians that trust and encourage me to think outside the box and experiment. In my first six months, the improvements and projects I’ve implemented have stacked up quickly-Devised comprehensive training curriculum and schedule. Early results include-previously accepted 3-year timeline/learning curve for technician development currently on-pace to shrink to 12-18 months -all technicians hitting goodie bag/yard sign goals (over handed out)-75% reduction in customer concerns -100% increase in membership clubs sold -25% increase in reviews -improved morale -all six new technicians on-pace for over $300k in sales within first year. Two techs on-pace for $500k+-Prioritized goodie bag distribution to maximize marketing efforts. By the end of Q4 (Mar 2022) we will hit $1M in generated revenue from bags alone. Haven’t hit that number in 5 years. Last year they were under $500K-Formed a partnership and HS Internship Program with the local career center/trade school-Increased technician team from 12 techs in June 2021 to 19 in Feb 2022-created template and analytics for skills gap analysis for each individual technician to aid in performance review/coaching Seeing these gains so early at Jerry Kelly has been inspiring, especially during an age of covid when so many businesses and individuals are struggling. Doing this work for an essential business has been a blessing, and it is thrilling to imagine how far we can take it as a TEAM. Culture and environments MATTER.
