About Gary Bruns

I am a pro-active and reliable professional dedicated to improving the knowledge, skills, and abilities of my co-workers and students. I am serving as an Industrial Equipment Repair & Maintenance Instructor at Hillyard Technical Center in St. Joseph, MO. I teach high school students the fundamentals required for entry level work in facility and equipment maintenance. I also serve as a Senior Tutor in Industrial Arts and Mathematics at Johnson County Community College. From 2017 to 2019 I served as the Engineering Manager at CertainTeed Gypsum, a subsidiary of Saint-Gobain, in Fort Dodge, Iowa. I lead six professional engineers and guided over 50 hourly and salaried employees in utilizing World Class Manufacturing principles to improve production efficiency, industry and machinery knowledge, and equipment reliability. Prior to joining CertainTeed I led 90 expert instructors developing and providing training in safe small arms handling to new Sailors annually as a US Navy Master Training Specialist and training program manager. My 25+ years of Navy experience includes providing reliability and repair project management onboard two US Navy aircraft carriers and leading highly trained mechanical and electrical technicians across departments to accomplish numerous and extensive projects both large and small. I have over 15 years of experience in mechanical maintenance, maintenance management, and leading engineering technicians. I have over 10 years of experience training an adult workforce in diverse subjects from human resources administration to industrial casualty control. In addition to my hands-on experience, I have a Bachelor of Science from Oregon State University and am trained in Lean Six Sigma/Continuous Process Improvement principles. I have been certified by the U.S. Navy as a Master Training Specialist and Senior NJROTC Instructor and twice attended the U.S. Navy Instructor school developing a diverse portfolio of learning and development strategies. I am committed to technical excellence, operational readiness, and effective communication and am passionate about solving problems.
