About Gary Munnelly

I am a postdoctoral research fellow currently leading technical work on two Horizon Europe funded research projects in cybersecurity with a focus on disinformation, hate speech, and FIMI. In total I coordinate the technical activities of fourteen software engineering teams across Europe. Prior to that I was a the technical lead for the Virtual Treasury of Ireland where I led a team of seven research engineers. Over the lifetime of the project we digitally reconstructed over 700 years of records that were once believed to have been destroyed during the Irish civil war. My research has spanned numerous application domains over the course of my 12 year career in academia. I have developed Entity Linking algorithms that facilitate disambiguating entities in low resource environments. I have pioneered the development of knowledge graphs that model the complex web of Irish history. I have developed client software to provide decision support for medical doctors. I have architected and implemented enormous, complex systems that daily process terabytes of data in order to identify criminal activity linked to disinformation. Coming from an academic background, I am also a teacher. I derive great joy from passing the things that I learn on to those around me. I have delivered lectures on topics such as information retrieval, database systems, and knowledge engineering. I have led labs for undergraduate students on programming fundamentals, data structures and algorithms in C/C++, Java, Python, and ARM7. Fundamentally I am a maker. I love learning how things work at all levels of the software engineering stack and always have a string of personal projects running in the background. I believe in building high quality tools that have a real and lasting impact on the world around me. Ask me what I am working on. In my spare time I aspire to become a fine furniture maker. To help with motivation, I have already disposed of most of my existing furniture.
