About Gary Paoli

Gary has worked on environmental and social aspects of sustainable development in Southeast Asia since 1991, with a focus on sustainable land use, agri-commodity supply chains, and innovative forms of blended governance over complex social and economic systems. He combines formal training in economics and biology with practical experience in Indonesia to overcome barriers to sustainability in agriculture, especially oil palm, forestry and land use. He’s conducted long term research on the ecology of lowland rain forests in SE Asia, and has extensive professional experience combining scientific knowledge, cultural fluency and creativity to build consensus among diverse stakeholder groups pursuing diverse solutions to shared, complex problems. Gary is co-founder and Director of Daemeter, a leading research and consulting group promoting sustainable management of natural resources, with offices in Indonesia and the US He's also co-founder of PemPem, a social ERP based enterprise to professionalize rural agricultural supply chains and deliver real time traceability data, and Senior Advisor for Lestari Capital, an initiative to mobilize finance for long term, results based support of field-based conservation and rehabilitation programs throughout SE Asia. Gary's passionate about evidence-based decision-making, building shared understanding of complex problems through thoughtful research and writing, and promoting collective action to address shared problems.
