About Gavin mc Devitt

I have been working as an archaeologist for over 21 years, beginning my career in Ireland before emigrating to Australia in 2006. In the early days, I worked primarily for heritage consultancies before moving on to roles with a Native Title Representative Body, state government, and Prescribed Bodies Corporate (PBCs). I even had a brief stint running my own business—while it wasn’t wildly successful, it proved a valuable learning experience. Much of my professional life has been dedicated to the practical aspects of heritage identification and recording. However, I’ve been fortunate to gain experience in a wide range of other areas, including compliance, policy development, community engagement, project management, training, GIS, analysis, remote sensing, land management, and systems development, among others. My career has been almost entirely focused on the protection and advocacy of Aboriginal cultural heritage, which is where my true passion lies. This work has given me the privilege of collaborating with incredible people in some truly remarkable places. Currently, I work for the Robe River Kuruma Aboriginal Corporation based in Karratha. I am also a PhD candidate with the Desert People’s Project (ARC), where I am exploring predictive modelling.
