About Gavin Oconnor

I am the Chief Executive Officer and owner of the Tūpore Group comprising Tūpore Infrastructure Limited, Tūpore Aggregates Limited and Tūpore Asphalt Limited. Tūpore is a full service civil construction company servicing the Hawkes Bay, East Coast and central North Island. I was attracted to this business by it's community focus and an ambition for Tūpore Infrastructure to be the vehicle which creates positive outcomes in the lives of people who work for the group and the wider community the business serves. With services spanning quarrying, asphalt production and civils construction I'm excited about the future success of this group. Prior to my role with Tūpore Infrastructure I was the Regional Director for Transportation New Zealand at Stantec. My passion for developing teams focused on getting the very best people with the right skills in the right location drove a great culture and successful business. I led the business through a number of significant change processes including a change in market needs, a growth in capital delivery and diversification into the private sector. Looking back on this period shows a business which has grown considerably whilst retaining a fantastic culture across the 240+ person team. I have 18 years experience in Traffic and Transport Engineering and Planning and have worked for both Local Government and Engineering Consultancy prior to my move in to Construction. My previous work in the UK involved developing transport strategies and policies in relation to development control in addition to assessing complex transport assessments and planning proposals. Since moving to NZ I have been involved in a wide variety of works including developing asset management plans for local government clients, undertaking transport assessments for private clients and designing and implementing road safety and traffic engineering schemes. I continuously develop my skills through participation in national transportation groups and attendance at relevant seminars and courses. I have published a number of technical papers and articles since arriving in NZ and have presented at the in 2011, the 2walkandcycle conference in 2013, the Roads Australia Sydney Forum 2017 and the IPWEA conference 2018. I was formerly a member of the CEO Institute and more recently I've joined the Weave executive leadership cohort. Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng - Transportation), International Professional Engineer (IntPE) and CMEngNZ.
