Background
About Gavin Perry
I have been working in the FE sector for the past 10 years. In the past 10 years I have taught a variety of levels, age groups and abilities. I started my career teaching offender learners English and Maths Functional Skills. This was obviously very different to teaching in mainstream but allowed me to develop my teaching skills but also introduced me to varied levels of behaviour and ability. From this I moved in to more mainstream education, where I started teaching English from Pre-Entry to Level 2 to learners with learning disabilities. This was a very rewarding part of my career but felt that I needed a change. From this I moved to teaching GCSE, both the old spec and more recently the new 1-9. Language and Literature are my passion, so it was nice to tackle the aspects of English that I really enjoy, but the levels I taught before really helped improve students' grammar. This reflected in the results of students that I taught and I am a keen believer in merging the grammar elements along with the analysis to get the best results possible. In my final years in FE I taught A Level English Language and A Level English Literature. I am proud to say that my success rates in A Level were at 94% last year, which was across very big groups. Part of my current role is teaching students who are going through their teacher training, this is extremely rewarding as I am helping the next generation of teachers. I was a Teaching and Learning Coach at City of Wolverhampton College for 4 years. Duties include mentoring/coaching members of staff. This could be through self referral for staff wanting T&L ideas, new staff that need support with T&L or, in some cases, staff that have not achieved the observation process. As part of the role I had to create and deliver CPD to staff across three campuses. This was a very rewarding role that has developed my skills to reach my ambition of being a leader in some capacity in an educational establishment.
