Background
About Geert Verhoeven
I was born (1978) in Ghent, Belgium, where I also graduated (2002) and received my PhD degree (2009) in Archaeology. From 2010 to 2013, I held a part-time professorship at Ghent University. Since 2010, I have been living and working in Vienna, Austria. First as a senior researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Archaeological Prospection & Virtual Archaeology (LBI ArchPro), but between 2021 and 2023 also as the institute's vice director. From 09-2021 to 08-2023, I coordinated the academic graffiti project INDIGO (https://projectindigo.eu). In October 2023, I started a full-time position as a senior scientist at the University of Vienna. In addition to research, I am teaching two courses:"Photography for archaeologists" and "Image-based 3D modelling for heritage purposes". I do not have any unique talent. I am only passionately curious about: imaging & image processing | image-based 3D surface modelling | spatio-temporal + semantic data structuring & reasoning | scientific visualisations | colourimetry | statistics. My endeavours in these fields aim to improve data acquisition, data management and information extraction procedures for the benefit of archaeology and cultural heritage at large. My work is also guided by the words of philosopher John Dewey (1859-1952): ≪ Theory without practice is empty. Practice without theory is blind. ≫ Most of my academic work is open-access and shared via various platforms. I am a member of multiple international organisations (AARG, CIPA Heritage Documentation, ISAP and ISPRS), sit on six editorial boards and have reviewed papers for over 60 international journals. Some of my photos have appeared in National Geographic, newspapers and local magazines. However, my biggest achievement was born at the start of 2021. Ensuring that this little creature finds his way in this challenging world, while fostering a life of learning, empathy, exploration and respect, remains the most significant but most rewarding challenge.
