About Gemma Blok
Gemma Blok is professor in the History of Psychiatry at Utrecht University; and in the history of Mental Health and Culture at Open University. Her research focuses on the history of psychiatry, addiction and intoxication. She is currently leading an NWO funded project Drugs Monologen, collecting stories of intoxicant use in the Netherlands since the 1960s through oral history and digital storytelling. Project partners are the Poppi Drug Museum in Amsterdam and KNAW-DANS. From 2019-2022, Blok was a principal investigator in the HERA project "Governing the Narcotic City. Imaginaries, Practices and Discourses of Public Drug Cultures in European Cities from 1970 until Today". Current topics in academic teaching areas are the history of psychiatry, addiction and intoxication in the 20th century; stigma,(mental) health & culture; and psychiatric medication narratives.
