About Gemma Hoad

Gemma Hoad is a Bioinformatician and Database Administrator working in the Research Computing Group of Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, BC. Gemma has 24 years experience working in the bioinformatics sector. Her extensive experience covers data management of large medical and biological data sets, designing and writing reusable code, providing technical support to internal and external collaborators, automating application infrastructure builds for use in Cloud Computing, project managing web applications and is a contributor in the Bioinformatics National Team of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada. Prior to joining the Research Computing Group, Gemma worked in application design and management for the Fiona Brinkman Laboratory and before that, worked for the Genome Sciences Centre (part of the BC Cancer Agency) in Vancouver as a Computational Biologist in management of next generation sequencing data. Gemma has also worked at the European Bioinformatics Institute as a Bioinformatician in the European Nucleotide Archive team, streamlining pipelines to synchronize data between large external databases and managing internal data pipelines. Gemma has a MSc in Bioinformatics and a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester (United Kingdom).
