About Gemma King

I am an Australian Research Council Fellow and Senior Lecturer in French at the Australian National University. From 2023-2026, I am completing a DECRA project, ‘Sign on Screen: Language, Culture and Power in Sign Language Cinemas’, collaborating with Deaf Connect and the National Film and Sound Archive. This project will produce the first book on global sign language cinemas and the Sign on Screen film festival, to take place at the NFSA in 2025. My research focuses on contemporary screen studies, especially francophone and sign language cinemas, as well as the connections between colonial histories and French museums. I write about representations of multilingualism, deafness, transnationalism, violence, migration and social power in contemporary cultural production. My writing has been published in French Screen Studies, L’Esprit Créateur, Inside Higher Ed, French Cultural Studies, Contemporary French Civilization, The Journal of Romance Studies, The Australian Journal of French Studies, The Conversation, Francosphères and numerous edited volumes. I am the author of two books, Decentring France: Multilingualism and Power in Contemporary French Cinema (Manchester University Press, 2017) and Jacques Audiard (2021), a volume in Manchester UP’s French Film Directors series. I am a proud co-founder of the ANU Auslan Club with ANU students, recipient of eight teaching awards at the College, University and national levels, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and President of the Australian Society for French Studies.
