Background
About Gemma Richardson
I am a Master of Public Health Student at Monash University, specialising in Global and Planetary Health. My passion for public health and the interaction between health and the planet, societal systems and inequities was shaped during my undergraduate studies where I completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science majoring in Population Health, and Human Geography and Planning. These interests are closely aligned with my core values of sustainability, human rights, and social justice, which drive my commitment to building a healthier and more equitable society.I have a specific interest in global health, and the intersection between climate change and health. I am currently completing a practicum at the Monash Sustainable Development Institute, working on a research project on climate change and health in the Western Pacific Region. In 2023, I also represented Monash University at the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Student Global Climate Change Simulation. These opportunities have allowed me to explore my interest in this area and reinforced my commitment to finding innovative solutions to address global health issues utilising systems thinking. I currently work part-time at Dental Health Services Victoria in a patient-focused role, working to improve oral health outcomes and patient experiences across the state of Victoria. Throughout this role, as well as in my previous position as an outpatient clerk at Fiona Stanley Hospital, I have gained experience working within the health sector and within multi-disciplinary teams. These roles have deepened my understanding of the healthcare sector and of delivering quality, patient-centred care. Over my internship at Telethon Kids Institute in 2022, I gained experience in research by assisting on a large mixed-methods study. This included quantitative and qualitative data analysis and collection, focusing on active transport methods to schools.I am also passionate about giving back to the community, having volunteered with Asthma WA throughout my final year of my undergraduate degree. I assisted the community fundraising team at Asthma WA with coordinating fundraising initiatives and planning social media strategies.I am excited to begin working in the public health sector, where I can contribute to meaningful change and bring new ideas, energy, and passion. I wish to work at an organisation that aligns with my values, commitments and passions and will bring enthusiasm, a sustained curiosity, and a strong desire to learn to my future roles.
