At its core, all business is the organised creation and exchange of value.Someone identifies a need — a problem to be solved, a desire to be met, a gap to be filled — and builds a repeatable system to address it in exchange for something of worth in return, typically money. Everything else flows from that simple transaction.A few layers deeper, business is fundamentally about people: the customers whose lives you're trying to improve, the team you recruit and lead, and the stakeholders you're accountable to. Strategy, finance, operations, and technology are all just tools in service of those human relationships.There are perhaps three tensions that define how well a business performs:Value creation vs. value capture — creating genuine worth for customers while retaining enough of it to sustain and grow the enterpriseShort-term vs. long-term — delivering results today without compromising the capacity to deliver tomorrowEfficiency vs. adaptability — optimising what works now while staying capable of reinventionThe businesses that endure tend to do so because they solve a real problem, build genuine trust, and adapt as the world changes around them. The ones that fail usually lose sight of one of those three things.
