About Georgia Banton

I am involved in a variety of projects at the Telethon Kids Institute, as part of the Paediatric Respiratory Physiology research team. Our research focuses on the respiratory impacts of various lung diseases of childhood such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, preterm birth as well as other conditions. I have a background in exercise and health promotion, and as such, have a keen interest in physical activity as an intervention for various health problems of childhood, especially from the perspective of motor proficiency. I am interested in exploring the impact of poor motor proficiency among children born very preterm on their future activity levels, and the possibility of a targeted intervention in this group. My role involves coordinating researchers and medical professionals of all levels to ensure the smooth running of projects, as well as recruiting and seeing study participants aged from 3 months up to early adulthood. I currently manage two pharmaceutical trials, one investigator initiated and one sponsor-led. Database management plays a large part in my project coordination role, as does quality control and report writing. Others areas I am involved in include the promotion of our research within the community, encouraging community and consumer involvement. My role involves analyzing, writing and presenting my data, including at conferences nationally. Further to this, I assist with the completion of ethics and grant applications as required, involving the literature search and review process. My longer term goals are to continue my work in the health industry, and build on my project coordination and management skills with the goal of working in the public health industry in a project management or public health policy related facet. I would also like to further my qualifications in the field of research, such as research development/ commercialization and am investigating opportunities to do this within the area of child well being and development.
