About Gerald Silk

Dr. Gerald Silk is Professor of Art History at Tyler School of Art, Temple University. He has taught at Temple for over twenty-five years; prior to that he taught at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University. He holds an AB in History from Brandeis University and a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Virginia. Silk publishes and lectures widely on Modern and Contemporary Art and is the author of many books, catalogues, book chapters, articles, and reviews. He has worked with museums internationally, curating exhibitions and writing catalogue essays and entries: these include the Hara Museum of Art, Tokyo; Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; National Air and Space Museum, Washington; Palazzo Grassi, Venice; Pensacola Museum of Art, Pensacola, FL; Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME; Rose Art Museum, Brandeis, Waltham, MA; Temple Gallery, Philadelphia; and Washington Project for the Arts, Washington DC. He has served on boards and juries of museums, art periodicals and conferences and symposia. Silk has received numerous awards and fellowships. These include: American Academy in Rome Prize; Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (Senior Fellow); College Art Association; National Endowment for the Humanities; the Smithsonian; and the Mellon Foundation. From Temple, Silk received a Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching; Provost’s Commission on the Arts Grant; and several Study Leaves and Grant-in-Aid for Research awards.
