About Gerard Ribbers
Gerard Ribbers (1961) obtained his MD degree in 1989 and finished his rehabilitation medicine residency program in 1995 at the Sint Maarten clinic in Nijmegen. In 1995 he started working as a rehabilitation physician at Rijndam Rehabilitation in Rotterdam, focusing on patients with acquired brain injury. In 2001 he successfully defended his PhD thesis ‘Complex Regional Pain Syndrome: A Study on Pain and Motor Impairments." In 2012 he was appointed as professor of Neurorehabilitation at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of the Erasmus University MC and became chair of this department in 2018. Amongst others he served as chair of the medical staff, managed the inpatient division of Rijndam, chaired the special interest group Traumatic Brain Injury of the Dutch Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine for 10 years (1997-2007), instituted and chaired the Intersectoral Regional Collaboration on Acquired Brain Injury in the Rotterdam area (1998-2001), served as president of the International Brain Injury Association from 2015-2017 (in which period he chaired the IBIA world congress in the World Forum in the Hague), and organized and chaired the Rehab week, the world congress on Rehabilitation Technology in Ahoy Rotterdam in 2021. Besides this he (co-)authored several scholarly books and book chapters on Brain Injury, published over 200 scientific papers served as vice president of the Science Committee of the Dutch Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, and as the scientific lead of the Flagship Convergence Human Mobility Center. This flagship project aims to develop technological solutions for minimally supervised rehabilitation at home with equal access for all in a collaboration between the Erasmus University, the Technical University of Delft, the Erasmus MC, and Rijndam.
