About Gianna Saarenvirta

I am currently enrolled in Trent University for a PhD in Environmental and Life Sciences, specializing in fluvial geomorphology and agriculture with an expected graduation in 2027. I graduated from Trent University with a Masters in Environmental and Life Sciences specializing in aeolian geomorphology, as well as graduated with honours for a joint-major in Environmental Science and Physical Geography. My hard work and commitment to my academics has led me to recieving the Dean's Honor Roll at Trent University in 2017/18 school year, 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21 school year and President’s Honour Roll for my academic excellence during my tenure at Trent University. I have gained knowledge and understanding from environmental policies, projects, and courses. Secondly, I have developed communication skills and environmental awareness from a volunteer project in Costa Rica for the conservation of sea turtles and jaguars. I have experience in analyzing large data sets as a result of previous undergraduate course work, as well as for my masters thesis. I obtained skills using Flow Trackers and Swoffers in collecting data for river velocity and discharge, while doing field work with the MNRF in a Fluvial Geomorphology course. This leads to my experience in field work from collecting precipitation data, to analyzing river cross-sections and velocity profiles, to carrying out research as a result of an NSERC scholarship in a boundary layer wind tunnel. Lastly, course work has contributed to my experience in technical skills such as GraphPad, Surfer 9, Sigma Plot, GIS, MATLAB, and statistical analysis using R and Excel.
