About Gillian Laird

I am a Clinical Skills Tutor at Edinburgh Napier University with a strong background as a Registered Child Health Nurse, combining hands-on clinical experience in surgical wards and theatre/recovery with a passion for healthcare education and patient safety. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Child Health from Edinburgh Napier University and have developed a diverse skill set that includes leadership, communication, and clinical training. As a faculty member in Emergency Care of Severe Burns and an instructor for Immediate Life Support (ILS), Scottish Multiprofessional Maternity Development Programme (SMMDP), Mental Health First Aid, and First Aid, I am committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based training. I have designed and implemented bespoke first aid programmes for primary school pupils, including CPR and safe defibrillation, fostering early links with local emergency services and inspiring future healthcare careers. I also created and deliver a tailored NMC OSCE preparation programme supporting international nurses to achieve their NMC registration, collaborating with NHS Education for Scotland, OSCE test centres across the UK, and multiple NHS health boards in Scotland. My involvement in shaping OSCE assessments through feedback and testing ensures continuous improvement in nurse education. I am passionate about advancing healthcare education, promoting patient safety, and supporting the professional development of healthcare practitioners. I have a keen interest in the use of simulation to provide immersive learning opportunities.
