Background
About Gio Dolcecore
My name is Gio Dolcecore. I reside on the Traditional Territories of Treaty 7, where the Elbow (river) meets the Bow (river) named Mohkinstsis by the Blackfoot people. My immediate family settled here from the Mediterranean seas of Europe (Italy and Greece). I am the first generation of my family to begin the process of decolonization, including actively advocating for the emancipation of Indigenous and racialized communities of Canada, promoting the independence of Indigenous and racialized persons, children, families and communities, and actively practicing reciprocity with those I share the land with. I am a registered Clinical Social Worker, sex therapist, and educator. I specialize in promoting mental health through collective, collaborative and affirmative practices. My practice with couples surrounds topics of sex and intimacy, marriage and divorce, ethical non monogamy and encouraging consensual partner equity. Access to barrier free and accessible mental health care should be and can be a basic human need that all members of our community can access. Because of this, I often volunteer my skillsets to local organizations and continue to advocate for accessible mental health care for all. This also includes promoting the longevity and health of our mental health workers, ensuring workplace environments offer ongoing support to our frontline staff. I am a professor and my summarized teaching philosophy states: through laughter we can learn anything. I believe the classroom is a collaborative learning space between student and instructor, where community promotes educational goals. My service to my educational institution, and to academia at large, includes supporting the equity, diversity, and inclusion of all students, staff and faculty. As well as, ensuring the access and inclusion policies of our University promote access for all minds and bodies. I acknowledge that everyone has the right to education and that learning should be and can be a basic human right. I continue to advocate for free education for children and adults, to support the growth and continued development of our communities. This includes providing all students with access to accommodations and inclusive spaces.
